Training for Councillors (England and Wales)
Briefings on specific aspects of planning
Where Councillors have already undertaken basic training, we are able to conduct sessions on specific aspects of planning. In the main these are half-day "modules" with a single presenter. However, they can be combined in various ways to make up a day programme, sometimes with modules running in parallel.
Topics include specialist aspects of planning and updates on policy, procedure and good practice.
Topics we currently offer include:
- an update on planning policies, PPG & PPS changes etc
- PPG3 and housing (local and/or strategic issues)
- planning appeals: the Councillor dimension
- The Development Plan Framework
- sustainability and its link to the planning framework
- planning enforcement
- planning obligations and agreements (planning gain)
- PPS7 - sustainable development in the countryside
- planning for minerals and waste: an introduction
- the new Regional Spatial Strategies (RSS) - the regulations and processes for preparation
- PPG13 and planning for transport
- advertisement control
- telecommunications
- trees, tree protection and development
- design considerations and the principles of urban design (a full day module)
- conservation areas/listed buildings (a full day module)
- handling the media
- planning for wind farms
We are also happy to consider developing bespoke session on other topics to suit the requirements of a particular authority.
