Training Programmes
Professionals becoming managers
Many professional staff in local government receive little or no management training as part of their initial professional education. However, their jobs inevitably involve the use of skills which can be broadly termed "managerial". This training workshop is aimed at those people in particular and is especially useful to staff who have been promoted into supervisory positions, or who are being considered for such promotion. The workshop aims to raise awareness of the skills required of managers in this position. It is concerned with skills development and takes a highly practical approach to what is involved in managing people.
The workshop aims to:
- improve understanding of what management is and the difference between "professional" and "managerial" activity
- establish a clear understanding of what management involves
- develop an appreciation of the key qualities of management
- identify and develop key aspects of managerial activity and related skills
- provide a foundation for continued management development in the normal working environment.
Noted for its practicality and unique relationship to the needs of development professionals in the publci sector, the workshop demystifies the management process without underestimating its difficulty.
