The Role of Councillors in Planning: propriety and good practice

This workshop has been widely run on an in-house basis and is one of TRA’s most requested workshops for Councillors.  It focuses on the special role of Councillors in the UK planning system, and in particular the many sensitive propriety/probity issues involved.

The content of the workshop includes:

This workshop is not intended as a briefing on the planning system; it focuses exclusively on issues and good practice associated with the role of Councillors within the system.  The workshop considers mainly the development management aspects since this is where Councillors have most experience and where most problems arise but there will be reference as appropriate to the development plan dimension.  It is strongly recommended for all Councillors on a Planning/DC/DM Committee and is very useful for any Councillor interested or involved in the planning system.

The workshop runs from 9.15am to 4.30pm. We are aware that a full-day workshop can seem a long one but our techniques are varied, our presenters lively, and discussion breaks frequent. Techniques include inputs from our Presenters, discussion and Q&A sessions, and consideration of case studies in groups. The atmosphere is relatively informal and interactive.  Participant numbers are limited to a maximum of 20 in order to ensure maximum benefit to all participants.  Participants are given the opportunity to flag up any specific questions/issues in advance via brief pre-course questionnaires.
