In-house Training on Planning for Building Control Staff

An Introduction to Planning for Building Control Staff

This recently developed workshop is aimed at all Building Control Officers and Building Control support staff who come into regular contact with the planning system but who are not particularly familiar with how the system operates and the concepts which go to make up the planning process.

There can be a great deal of overlap between planning and building control, especially when the two regimes are dealing with the same site. It can therefore be of great benefit to the authority if building control staff have an understanding of the constraints within which the planning officer must operate and the issues which can or cannot be taken into account when making a decision and determining an application.

The aim of the workshop is therefore to help participants develop their knowledge and confidence when liaising with development control officers. It will also enable them to make their own building control decisions with a greater awareness of the planning implications and the sanctions available if enforcement action becomes necessary.

Specific aspects to be covered include:

  • What is town planning?
  • Who is involved in the process and how do they relate to each other?
  • How LPA's deal with the question "Do I need planning permission?"
  • Planning applications - what do they involve; how are they handled; how are they decided?
  • What happens if somebody "develops" without planning permission?
  • Planning appeals
  • Links between Planning and Building Control

This training session is delivered by Lee Prebble.
