Training for Regeneration and Economic Development
Last year's Government Review of Sub Regional Economic Development and Regeneration (July 2007) encourages councils to take a greater responsibility for, and have an increased involvement in, regeneration activity. It also raises the expectations that councils will play a more active role within the increasingly important and growing sub-regional agenda.
Sometimes, the local authority's role in the economic regeneration of its area can be vague, ad hoc, or even non-existent. The approach taken is often private sector led and disconnected, without effective community leadership or involvement. Even where there are dedicated economic development and regeneration teams, the approach is not always cross-disciplinary and joined-up between the various functions of the authority. Activity might not always reflect the needs or wants of the local community, with the result that development opportunities could be missed, or communities lose faith in the council's ability to make changes happen.
To try to address some of these issues, TRA has developed a short series of one-day workshops looking at different aspects of Regeneration and Economic Development.
