Training for Councillors involved in Planning - inter-authority roadshow
Demand for TRA training for Councillors is always particularly high in the post-election period. Traditionally, our Councillor training has only been available on an in-house basis for individual authorities, but this year we have also organised an inter-authority roadshow which will be visiting a number of venues across England during June and July.
Although the timing of these workshops means that they will be particularly attractive to new members of Planning/DC/DM Committees, attendance is by no means restricted and any Councillor with an interest or involvement in planning can attend.
The workshops on offer will be our two most popular one-day sessions; A Briefing on Planning for Councillors and The Role of Councillors in Planning: propriety and good practice. In an ideal world, Councillors should attend the Briefing on Planning as soon as possible after joining the Committee so that they can "hit the ground running". As for the Role of Councillors workshop, they are likely to get the most out of this once they have attended a couple of Committee meetings and have a basic idea of what is involved. (However, the timing is not crucial if it does not fit in with your circumstances - our presenters are accustomed to dealing with groups of varying experience.)
Running these sessions on an inter-authority basis provides an ideal opportunity for those for whom in-house training is either not available or not appropriate, including:
- authorities where only a few Councillors currently need training, making it a more cost-effective option
- authorities wanting to “test-run” our workshops with a view to possibly running them in-house at a later stage
- Councillors who may have missed out on in-house training for any reason
- Councillors who want to meet colleagues from other authorities (not possible on in-house courses).
NB. If you do have a larger number of Councillors requiring training, then an in-house workshop is likely to be more appropriate/cost effective. View the features of in-house training and if you would like more information please contact Angela Holmes.
