Training Programmes
Training for Planning and Development Practitioners 2012 (Scotland)
We have a well established programme of training workshops specifically for planning and development staff in Scotland. These are for limited numbers of participants (maximum 20) under the direction of one of our team of presenters. Workshops are participatory, involving discussions, exercises and case study consideration, as well as key input by the presenters themselves. All our presenters are not only expert and experienced practitioners but they are also skilled in getting material across in a "user-friendly" manner.
Details for each event are shown below. Click on the individual event title for more detailed information. Downloadable pdf leaflets/bookings forms which give further details of the course content are now available for most of the workshops. However, if the one you are looking for is not yet available bookings can be made using the General Booking Form. By clicking on the event title, you will also find a link to our online provisional bookings facility where you can reserve a place on any of the events listed.
A discount of between 10 and 15% is available when 2 or more bookings are made at the same time on any number of events across the 2012 programme. Further details are on the discounted block booking form, which can be downloaded via the link on the right hand side of this page.
Planning Admin Network
The Planning Admin Network (PAN) was established in 2006 and is co-ordinated by TRA. PAN is open to anyone who is interested in the way in which the planning process is administered in England, Scotland and Wales, in either the public or private sector.
PAN provides a convenient way for its members to contact each other and share their experiences, issues and problems etc and to get regular, up-to-date information about developments in the planning world. As you might expect, the majority of members are working in planning support roles but anyone involved in planning is welcome to join. The network functions via a website: www.planningadminnetwork.co.uk. Key features include:
- an interactive Discussion Forum
- a News page, which is circulated to members on a monthly basis
- a Training Events Calendar
- a Useful Links page.
Membership of PAN is absolutely FREE. The registration process is quick and easy via the above website; all you need to provide is your email address and preferred username and password.

Block booking discount
For 2012, we are continuing to offer our popular discounted block booking scheme, recently made even more attractive by the reduction in bookings required to qualify for a discount. If you book two or more places at the same time (spread over any number of events) you will receive a discount of between 10 and 15%, depending on the total number of places booked. In most cases this means that you will be paying less per workshop this year than in 2010. Not only does this scheme offer great value for money, it also provides an opportunity to arrange your training for 2012 all in one go.
Bookings should ideally be made using our special block booking form

Featured workshop
Managing in Planning Today: achieving more form less (NEW)
With the Scottish Government soon to announce its findings on a new Planning Performance Framework, which aims to provide for a more rounded view of the quality of planning services, and the current uncertainties around planning budgets and localised fee setting, planning in Scotland is about to get a lot more complicated. Managers will have to address these changes and the expectations that go with them. Using a mixture of case studies and motivational/leadership self-assessments, this brand new one-day workshop looks at how changing processes and practices have to be complimented by changing human and cultural behaviours in order to overcome resistance to change and meet the above expectations. Focusing on three key skills of leadership, motivation, and handling resistance to change, participants will come away with a better understanding of how they can proactively influence service delivery in these challenging times. They will also better understand where their own strengths and weaknesses lie and how they impact on their managerial qualities. This workshop is appropriate for section managers, team leaders (both planning and support teams) and senior officers looking to take the next step into management.
In-house training
All the workshops featured in the 2012 programme can be delivered on an in-house basis for an individual authority (or group of authorities). Please contact Angela Holmes for further information. Details of other in-house training options available can be found here.
